This engagement was with an ICT company, through the NZTE Better by Design Programme. It is part of a wider strategic engagement, currently in progress. The client was moving into a new workspace and wanted to make sure staff had a say into how that workspace was designed.

The approach that we developed used Lego Serious Play to to set the aperture a bit wider on that objective, and do five things:

  • Understand the current needs, frustrations, motivations and ambitions of staff;
  • Understand current and desired behaviours around teamwork and collaboration, and the health of organisational culture as a whole;
  • Understand what was and what wasn't working around the current office spatial design;
  • Understand how we might use what we learned to design a workspace that fostered innovation and collaboration.
  • Use Lego to help staff iteratively prototype & design that ideal workspace, and document their design using a narrated video walkthrough.

The sessions proved to be very popular (expanding from 1 planned session to 6 sessions based on staff demand!), and successful in achieving the objectives above. Each was thoroughly documented, and this documentation informed the final design of the workspace - now complete.
