RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS OF THE DESIGN INDUSTRY IN NEW ZEALAND
This is a collaborative project between AUT, Massey and the Designers Institute to map the design industry in New Zealand.
The intention of this work is to both understand the current state of the design industry and the value that it adds nationally, and inform the development of a new government statistical framework that captures the emergence of new disciplines in the digital domains.
The immediate output of this work is a report and an infographic that visually maps trends in the design industry by discipline.
This information will (hopefully!) be used to inform government policy and tertiary education provision – particularly in the design disciplines.
Graphic showing how the current ANZSCO codes for several common design occupations are broken down. There are several misclassifications. This framework is unable to capture the emergence of new disciplines in the digital domain, and needs to be re-designed so that it can accommodate the inevitable changes in the structure of the design industry moving forward.
Graphic to show that most of the research work conducted on the design industry generally just referenced prior research work and 2006 Census data, all of which is based on the same - now outdated - ANZSIC and AZSCO code definitions, established in 2006.
